Trouble is a lot of the energy absorbing potential went when he hit the barrier but because of the angle he didn't slow down much before the 2nd impact.
Amzingly strong those cars though. I saw Mika Hakkinen's one in the science museum

I saw Piquet's brabham in the BMW musuem as well. That is scary. 1100hp+ with no traction control and no ABS. The Auto Unions in the Audi museum are pretty awesome too. They didn't think about driver safety in those days.
Ferrari museum is good as well. I love all the 50s and 60s sports racers.
