It took me two months of persuasion (and a CR!) to get 41111111111111 coded to bypass auth to enable test orders to be placed. But to test auth itself, you have no option but to use a real card.

Yes, I would have thought that a valid test should contain samples of all variants of number ranges, expiry dates etc possible, and the best place to get those is banks/CC companies. From other number validations I have done, there are normally ranges that never got issued, for example.
Company cards whose transactions can be audited sound a basic precaution too.

Yep - did all that in testing. This was really to verify the live implementation. Which didn't work, because they were still pointing at the staging server....
