The best time to ring BT is usually first thing in the morning when they open i.e. 8-8.30am when you should be put through to a UK based call centre. If you don't get through put the phone down until you get through to someone who sounds like they are from the UK.

If you are working at home find a friend or family member who doesn't mind you using their BT phone for this. Someone retired/elderly shouldn't mind you doing this.

Where the hell did that gem of logic come from?

        BT “It’s a fault”

BT India “ The cable is missing they have to dig up the road”

If the cable is missing how come I can talk to you now.

BT India “the server must be down”

But the other phones are working

BT India “No, it affects the whole village and we need to sent and engineer”

But I am living in a city, all the other phones are working including my other line.
BT India “ We can fix it by the 4th April”
You think thats bad. I've been with BT for nearly 10 years, I rang them to say I was leaving the UK within weeks and would no longer need the account and what was the correct process - they initially asked for £45 to dissconnect before finally agreeing to naff all when I said I would just cancel the DD and leave.

Make sure you confirm it's cancelled.

When I lasted moved I didn't get a final bill instead I got a phone bill with another 3 months line rental plus someone else's calls on it. I wouldn't have got it if my mail redirection hadn't been working

Also make sure you keep the last bill once you think you have done with them.

Several months after leaving one rented abode the next person couldn't get connected because somehow my name was still attached to the phone. BT wouldn't accept my identity without the account number. They wouldn't accept the landlady's authority as the owner of the premises either.

I think I ended up sending them a stiffly worded letter.

Good advice Sysman + SueEllen. I'm being looked after on this one as I own the house and it is being let by lettings agent who is managing all this to get my business - and they will also do the mail forwarding for both company and personal mail.
