In Russia you normally get a piss-poor 'official' salary and the rest bunged under the table to avoid paying tax. In dollars, around $200-$500 a month. But, as most of an age now wholly own a free flat as a gift from the Former Soviet Union on collapse, and as the korpuses are heated and lit centrally for the most part with no discernible metering I've seen, that salary is mostly disposable. Or rather saved to augment the meagre pension. But you get to retire at 55, three years after you are dead....

In Germany there is a difference in the cost of living between west and east as well.

I can vouch for that, in Berlin the cost of living is a somewhat cheaper. However don't expect to buy your sung to sleep farm reared corn fed chicken when you get there.

In Berlin we managed to wangle a suite in the Hotel Berlin for 35 Euro a night - bloody breakfast cost more but we wangled that somehow - current Ms stek speaks fluent German so she did her stuff - 7 Euro each ISTR....

If I had a contract in Berlin I'd quite happily like my life out in that hotel....
