          beating

I've got no idea what's got to do with the french.

but this statement came from a norwegian commentator in 1981.

He said "Maggie Thatcher Your boys took a hell of a beating!"

          9.9.1981
          Location Oslo
          Competition World Cup Qualifier
          Fixture Norway V England
          Result 2-1
          England Scorer Robson
          Norway Scorers Albertsen, Thoresen
          Team Clemence R N (Liverpool),
          Neal P G (Liverpool),
          Mills M D (Ipswich Town),
          Osman R C (Ipswich Town),
          Thompson P B (Liverpool),
          Robson B (West Bromwich Albion),
          Keegan J K (Southampton) - Captain,
          Francis T J (Manchester City),
          Mariner P (Ipswich Town),
          Hoddle G (Tottenham Hotspur),
          McDermott T (Liverpool),
          Subs: P Withe for Mariner,
and P S Barnes for Hoddle.

It's probably turned into a french prayer.

          even so.
          Chirac is a complete twat.
          blair even more so.

          they very much deserve eachother.

I think a fanny ****k is needed between them.

You are almost right. He started with Maggie Thatcher, but then continued listing all the famous English people from history that he could think of, before saying "your boys took a hell of a beating".

              I wouldn't call 2-1 "a hell of a beating".

It was a huge shock result. The equivalent of when England were beaten by the US. The previous time England played Norway (at Wembley), Norway were thrashed 4-0, and had never beaten England ever, their history of results being 6-0, 4-0, 4-1 and 6-1, all in England's favour.

When I lived in Norway in the mid-90s, it was still talked about and people fondly remembered what was a night of legendary partying. Most people felt it was the best night in Norway since the end of WWII. They are fanatical about football and most support English clubs. In fact, it is one of few places where you can get live premier games on the telly on Saturday for free (courtesy of state broadcaster NRK). One of the others was pre-war Iraq.
