I don't think your analogy is correct. Members of St. Johns that I know aren't Ambulance Service wannabes.

Not quite, Specials have all the powers of a regular copper, they just don't get paid.

I think the St John lads and lasses are generally quite useful as a first response solution and fulfil a pretty useful role at large "events" and such......
They can sort out quite a lot of tulip without the need to call on the resources of the Ambulance Service.... meaning that the Ambulance Service is better able to allocate resources to situations etc..... from my experience members of the Ambulance Service have a measure of respect for St John bods (not saying they don't take the pish though)......
