I remember a chap relating that he was given the COBOL manuals on Friday and told he was giving a COBOL course on Monday.

Pretty much like my experience with COBOL. Happily sitting there doing VM sysprog when got told that I'm doing a big COBOL project in 2 weeks on MVS. I had sen COBOL but then I had seen Sanskrit. Went on a one week course, came back and was project leader. Ended up with 7 people on the team at one point which was only meant to be 2.5 on a project which lasted 2 years and as only meant to be 6 months which taught me one thing, make the client sign off on the project details at the start so they can't keep changing their minds.
