Some people never leave their Windows XP machine unused and unattended, so the background tasks that are normally run when the machine is idol don't get run and the machine becomes very slow. To manually start that background tasks thingy in XP open up a command prompt and type in:

Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks
