Ah sorry VectraMan. Actually you probably can drive past us at 90 mph and the horses won't mind. Fck knows it's happened enough times - mostly when I've been riding with children. Overtake another vehicle while you are at it - seen that too many times.
What horses really hate is something creeping up on them silently (prey animals you see). They really hate paper bags, bicycles and also not too keen on cars creeping along behind them tooting their horns and loudly commenting on the physical attributes of the rider.

On one occasion (while I was being trailed) someone started up a chainsaw on the other side of the hedge. Horse leapt a few feet to the right and reared up. Screech of brakes from behind followed by much swearing from me ....

Seriously - when overtaking horses go to the other side of the road and the lead/reargunner rider should tell you when it is safe to overtake. Keep well back as they can't see something that is right up their arses. Just pretend they are bus width or you'll be extracting a spur from your wing mirror.
Oh and horses may be in the left hand lane when turning right (to avoid getting sandwiched between two cars), on roundabouts you are supposed to ride round the outside lane so if you see the rider indicating right it means 'not this exit'. Mostly horses are very good but you can't predict paper bag or chainsaw related incidents.

Good stuff

I used to ride when I was a kid, so I've got some idea of what it's like on the receiving end of idiot drivers. I thought I was pretty good when driving near horses, but on reflection maybe I should be hanging back a bit further when waiting to pass.
