Most abstract algebra, measure theory (including modern probability theory), category theory, and topology, and huge areas of modern analysis and geometry, was hardly known if at all before the 1900s.
Also, the pace of change and vast body of knowledge has grown dramatically since the 1940s, although for every problem that is solved it seems another two pop up in its place (which is a healthy sign though).Work in the public sector? Read the IR35 FAQ hereComment

Yes, it gives a nice perspective on truth and beauty to realise the timescale here. For example, Euclid's Elements was a textbook for two thousand years. It's still perfectly valid serious mathematics.Originally posted by sasguru View Post
