      I've often thought it might be fun, but we don't have a spare room... or preferably an outhouse/garage as I've heard it can smell a bit?

                  That's either because they bottled before fermentation was complete and did not stabilise it before bottling, or because they got an infection in the wine prior to bottling (because they did not sanitise properly). Unless they were trying to make a sparkling wine, in which case they over-did it with the priming sugar.

                  Bottle bombs are most usually experienced by beer makers that over-prime their bottles (as the beer is bottled with the yeast still alive).
