Actually that is the point - the kids will grow up and expect to interact with web-sites using similar 'techniques'. So if any contractors have not retired by then don't want to be on the bench they might need to find out what these 'techniques' are!
This default font is sooooooooooooo boring and so are short usernames

someone said these sites are for the kids, and someone else said they are fads.

I'd agree, but they are all trying to harness one thing in one way or another, page views for advertising revenue

facebook has loads of ad's, twitter doesn't yet though

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

          There comes a time
When we head a certain call
When the world must come together as one
          There are people dying
And it's time to lend a hand to life
          The greatest gift of all

          We can't go on
          Pretneding day by day
That someone, somewhere will soon make a change
We are all a part of
          God's great big family
And the truth, you know love is all we need

          [Chorus]
          We are the world
          We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
          So let's start giving
          There's a choice we're making
          We're saving our own lives
          It's true we'll make a better day
          Just you and me

          Send them your heart
So they'll know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stone to bread
So we all must lend a helping hand

          [Chorus]
          We are the world
          We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
          So let's start giving
          There's a choice we're making
          We're saving our own lives
          It's true we'll make a better day
          Just you and me

          When you're down and out
There seems no hope at all
          But if you just believe
There's no way we can fall
Well, well, well, well, let us realize
That a change will only come
When we stand together as one

          [Chorus]
          We are the world
          We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
          So let's start giving
          There's a choice we're making
          We're saving our own lives

            It's winter, it's raining
            You're tired, she's fainting
            You're bitter, she's brooding
            But don't be disenchanted
'Causs you can barely stand it

            The sweep and the grandeur
            The scope and the laughter
            The future, the future
            The future's got it covered
            With what will be discovered

In the future fun is fun
In the future, lots of sun
I'll be there, it's up to you
You'll be there if you don't do nothing foolish
You'll love it, I know it
I know what you like and
You'll love it, I know it
            We'll need some vintage vino
So wash you feet and stamp away

            Coming soon and everywhere
            Everyone will walk on air
Now it seems so far away
But each day it's getting closer and closer

            Convenience and pleasure
            All blended together
            And culture, and madness
You think you've seen it all
You've seen it all exept the future

Give me back my broken night
my mirrored room, my secret life
              it's lonely here,
there's no one left to torture
              Give me absolute control
              over every living soul
              And lie beside me, baby,
              that's an order!

Give me crack and anal sex
Take the only tree that's left
              stuff it up the hole
              in your culture
Give me back the Berlin wall
give me Stalin and St Paul
              I've seen the future, brother:
              it is murder.

Things are going to slide, slide in all directions
              Won't be nothing
              Nothing you can measure anymore
The blizzard, the blizzard of the world
              has crossed the threshold
              and it has overturned
              the order of the soul
              When they said REPENT REPENT
              I wonder what they meant
              When they said REPENT REPENT
              I wonder what they meant
              When they said REPENT REPENT
              I wonder what they meant.

You don't know me from the wind
you never will, you never did
              I was the little jew
              who wrote the Bible
I've seen the nations rise and fall
I've heard their stories, heard them all
but love's the only engine of survival
Your servant here, he has been told
to say it clear, to say it cold:
              It's over, it ain't going
              any further
And now the wheels of heaven stop
you feel the devil's RIDING crop
              Get ready for the future:
              it is murder.

Things are going to slide ...

There'll be the breaking of the ancient
              western code
Your private life will suddenly explode
              There'll be phantoms
There'll be fires on the road
              and a white man dancing
              You'll see a woman
              hanging upside down
her features covered by her fallen gown
and all the lousy little poets
              coming round
tryin' to sound like Charlie Manson
              and the white man dancin'.

Give me back the Berlin wall
Give me Stalin and St Paul
              Give me Christ
              or give me Hiroshima
              Destroy another fetus now
              We don't like children anyhow
              I've seen the future, baby:
              it is murder.

Things are going to slide ...

When they said REPENT REPENT ...

                A letter come blowin' in
                On an ill wind
                Somethin' 'bout me and you
                Never seein' one another again
And what I knew had come
                Stars struck deaf and dumb
                Like when we kissed
That taste of blood on your tongue

                Don't worry, darlin'
                No baby, don't you fret
                We're livin' in the future
And none of this has happened yet
                Don't worry, darlin'
                No baby, don't you fret
                We're livin' in the future
And none of this has happened yet

                Woke up election day
Sky's gunpowder and shades of grey
                Beneath the dirty sun
                I whistle my time away
                Then just about sun down
                You come walkin' through town
                Your boot heels clickin' like
The barrel of a pistol spinnin' round

                Don't worry, darlin'
                No baby, don't you fret
                We're livin' in the future
And none of this has happened yet
                Don't worry, darlin'
                No baby, don't you fret
                We're livin' in the future
And none of this has happened yet

                The earth it gave away
The sea rose towards the sun
I opened up my heart to you
It got all damaged and undone
                My ship Liberty sailed away
                On a bloody red horizon
                The groundskeeper opened the gates
And let the wild dogs run

                [Instrumental]

                Alone I limp through town
                A lost cowboy at sundown
Got my monkey on a leash
Got my ear tuned to the ground
                My faith's been torn asunder
Tell me is that rollin' thunder
                Or just the sinkin' sound
                Of somethin' righteous goin' under

                Don't worry, darlin'
                No baby, don't you fret
                We're livin' in the future
And none of this has happened yet
                Don't worry, darlin'
                No baby, don't you fret
                We're livin' in the future
And none of this has happened yet
None of this has happened yet
None of this has happened yet
None of this has happened yet
None of this has happened yet

                [Instrumental]

Na na na na, na na na na-na
Na na na na, na na na na-na
Na na na na, na na na na-na
Na na na na, na na na na-na
Na na na na, na na na na-na
Na na na na, na na na na-na
Na na na na, na na na na-na

                  here's an excellent prediction from

                  http://www.alittlehistory.com/future.htm

                  The Dead Can Live Again:

About 50 years from now, it will be possible to use virtual reality to bring the dead back to life. People will drag out their old and boring home movies and choose a relative to bring back to life. The visual will be combined with records about that person to create a virtual relative.

Then the family can have a chat with that relative, keep it running, and live with it. The experience will be like living with a ghost.

People who died long ago will be resurrected so they can take on new roles. In 2030 the great people of the 20th Century will be brought back alive virtually and be presented on television.

The world will look on in awe as they watch the famous interact at a party. They will watch Richard Nixon make out with Margaret Thatcher, the Three Stooges try to pick a fight with Hulk Hogan, Elvis (the king) Presley trying to impress Queen Elizabeth, and Albert Einstein exploring reality with Marilyn Monroe.

I'd like to bring back Jimi Hendrix and have him play Desolation Row. Sad, really.

an excerpt of a prediction from 1968 about 2008

Computers not only keep track of money, they make spending it easier. TV-telephone shopping is common. To shop, you simply press the numbered code of a giant shopping center. You press another combination to zero in on the department and the merchandise in which you are interested. When you see what you want, you press a number that signifies “buy,” and the household computer takes over, places the order, notifies the store of the home address and subtracts the purchase price from your bank balance. Much of the family shopping is done this way. Instead of being jostled by crowds, shoppers electronically browse through the merchandise of any number of stores
