Don't think you can say that I want to be governor of X school, so might not get into the one I want daughter to attend. But the fact that you are a governor in the area might help.

There are different types of governor. Parent governors (obviously) have kids at the school, but only become parent governors once the child is at the school. You would probably become a community governor - speak to your local authority - they're usually crying out for them.

You have to attend at least one meeting per term (usually kick off after hours but it depends on the school). It is rewarding and opens your eyes as to how people cope with such large requirements on such small budgets.
