True up till the tables where you need to have won fairly often (Or spent ages playing) to get on. Then people play more like they would for real. But you're right, I would be slightly more cautious with my cash if it was real rather than earned online.

Then again if he's playing against mates, most people have got absolutely no idea how to really play poker.

I'd guess so. Most fun one to play I think, and most common one out there these days.

No idea what my mate wants to play. He and his mates said "Leave the rules to us, we'll sort you out".

I just wanted to get a head start that's all.
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Think of it like this - assuming you're playing texas hold em, in very simple terms and worrying about only your first two cards (The rest of them come out later to make your overall hand), the following sort of applies.

              A high pair is a very good (A's - 10's), two high cards suited is good (A's, K's, Q's, J's, 10's, 9's) especially if they're within range of a run (i.e. within 9-10-j-q-k), two high cards non suited is ok (A-K, A-Q, K-Q etc).

I'd pretty much fold anything else - it gets more complicated depending on where you are on a table, how much you been winning (Scare people off playing you) etc but those are pretty good simple rules to live by and usually come out ahead against your average player.
