An asteroid heading for Earth could be successfully knocked off course to prevent mass devastation, after a Nasa mission succeeded in deflecting a space rock.

The £300 million Dart probe struck a 525ft-wide “moonlet” called Dimorphos at the end of September and new calculations show it succeeded in sending it on a new trajectory.

The purpose of the kamikaze first-of-its-kind experiment was to see if a collision could potentially divert an asteroid off its current path enough to stop it hitting our planet.

It would be rude for it not to hit every other planet first. We'll probably get pinballed by Mars.

I did wonder about that. What with gravitational forces being a spooky thing.

A tiny course adjustment that means it now passes a little bit closer to another object and, over time, the gravitation force from it affects its direction further until... BOOM! (and not in a good way)
