Interesting. Stats show around 5700 active Zen nodes globally and at $37 a coin you're making around $50/month (1.3 ZEN) for each node before VPS hosting costs. Unless coin value goes up or number of nodes stops increases, it won't be worthwhile creating Zen nodes.

I went through the math on this - I wanted to do secure nodes initially before I looked into mining. Secure nodes not profitable enough.

Recently I've been reading a lot more about the Ethereum project (ETH, not ETC) - the project as a whole (not just the currency) has some excellent features and the roadmap looks pretty good. Don't get me wrong, I love ZEN and have been following it ever since Scoots mentioned it, but it's just a currency at the moment... And a lot of the security features which are built in to the snarks protocol aren't currently being utilized.

I think once people start making proper use of the currency, it's value will definitely go up but, for now, my money is mostly on Ethereum.

Is there a good resource anywhere for a current snapshot of the alts, what they are proposing to offer/solve, and how far down their delivery roadmap they are?

This would help us determine which are decent longer term hodls due to the projects having more substance to them than some of the alts that are considered scam coins on places like reddit.

I know it's best to do your own research but as a starting point there must be a general summary somewhere to know which alts are worth spending the time investigating further. There's just so much fake news and fanboism out there (e.g. the 'war' between bitcoin and bitcoin cash groups) that makes it difficult to be sure of getting the real picture.

I've been looking for something like this which also lists how many coins/tokens are competing with each other in the same space. I want to specialise in the music area (my plan B) and there are 2 coins I know of (MUSIC, VOISE) which are live and have working Spotify like platforms with their own tokens. There are also a few projects looking to decentralise music on the blockchain and cut out all the middle men with smart contracts between listener and artist.

I'm seeing a lot of 'me too' in crypto at the moment so it would be good to have them all (including ICOs) categorized with easy to look up stats and info so we can gauge which ones have better potential.

I have some, not much tbh. I have a few alts too. Play money really. My biggest concern is this year a unified ban on crypto at the G8 summit or some similar meeting will hammer the current values back to where they were five years ago.

If the World leaders make it a criminal offence to buy, sell, trade, receive or send any non FIAT monetary token, then the values will implode. Crypto will still exist, but the current 10,000,000% gains will vanish.

I don't see a global ban on crypto - it's been adopted on Wall St with more futures/ETFs in the pipeline. I see more regulation and crackdown on anonymity, pump & dump and dodgy ICOs.

This is the year when institutional money starts flowing in to the better projects...

That's a bit like asking if there's any way of knowing which penny stocks are going to make you your first 10 grand. No-one is going to provide the information in a pretty infographic or summarised chart because if they have that to hand, they're more likely to sell it than publish it on the internet.

Scooter is subscribed to some kind of financial publication dedicated to crypto's (panama beach or something?) which gives you exactly the kind of info you're after but, IIRC it's about £3k per year. If I had the money I'd have bought that and invested instead of going the mining route, but didn't have enough dime to put down into the circular and also put money into coins.

To pick my coins I've done two things:

1) Listen to ScooterScott.
2) Research Coinbase and look at what's popular, review the charts
3) Pick a handful of projects and then read (note, NO fecking Youtube!) about them on Reddit, forums, etc.

Issue with Youtube is people can get very emotive in what they're saying and that can convince you to buy into it. Reading about it allows you to be slightly more away from the topic, make notes via copy paste and look at everything objectively.

I highly doubt this will happen. I don't see a how this could be enforced for a start. People use non-FIAT tokens for currency all the time, not just crypto. Not that that will stop world leaders making a clumsy attempt to do it, it just won't work.

Greater regulation of exchanges etc. is certainly a possibility, but I think that would actually be beneficial to the market after a short term FUD driven drop.

It won't be worded as a ban, but there will be onerous requirements to put full AML checks into every transaction. This will effectively kill the unregulated market, and panic selling with ensue. Companies found flaunting this will find their CEO's serving 20 years in a US prison.
