Aaranovitch argues that it is not self loathing, but loathing of others. I don't see it like this I think it is split into two.

1. about people who are super competitive deeply insecure envious self destructive and cowardly
2. about people who are guilty about their wealth and want to be seen as virtuous by sticking up for the "little guy" (read "condescending") Brian May and Bono are two prime examples.
