I had that one. You could at one time hand them in over the counter, but that was too easy, so they made you post it somewhere instead.

I also had a big bell outside which was a couple of quid a quarter.

Good point re morse. And if the telegraph had never been invented, imagine what keeping homing pidgeons would cost. Presumably you would need a pidgeon for every correspondent as each only knows one homing address. But at least we wouldn't get any junk mail!
