I was on the bench for 18 months over the last 12 years. Unfortunately, 15 months of those were over the last four years with the Winter of 2022-23 being the worst.
Similar experience over the last two weeks. I interviewed with three potential clients for time-sensitive projects they cannot find permies for. Looks like a handful of outside IR35 roles have been released. I had to tell two recruiters offering inside roles that I'm no longer interested after...
Most likely. I can live/work in the EU. Never thought this would be an option I would be considering. I will be making my mind up this week after the announcement.

There is a point at which you just give up and move elsewhere. I am sure one industry will be...
I had two clients in the past, one was a bog standard outside IR35 contract, the other had a deliverable with a deadline but no hours specified, which allowed me to work before/after hours and on weekends as the client only wanted to have an actual piece of code at the end of the three-month...
Yes, we have to adapt fast, because it is a matter of survival for many, but clients have yet to realise that this shortage of skills and talent is coming. AI won't help them neither will agencies or consultancies. Contractors used to fill in the gaps for startups, but that's going away so it...
Avoid anyone based outside UK as it complicates taxes and payments. Every time you get contacted, do a Google search for "<name of the recruitment company> reddit" and see if others have stories to tell.
Good luck!
LinkedIn is owned by MSFT so my expectations are low. I lost around 100 contacts. It seems like LI have unleashed their AI bot pruner, with predictable results.
I hate to explain time between contracts. I was recently asked to explain what I was doing for the last two months and provide references for the time I "worked on my own projects". We agreed to call it "unemployment". This is for a contract outside IR35, B2B, so why the hell they need to know...
Clients are keeping their purses closed until the budget. If NI insurance goes up there may be more interest in hiring contractors.
I am seeing more PM roles outside IR35 being offered recently (last four months). Not sure if it's a sign of recovery, the theory being that if PM roles are coming...
It wasn't him. IR35 legislation went into full force in 2019. All gov, banking, and other sectors made contractors an offer they could not refuse: go inside or **** off. Smaller clients used outside IR35 contractors for a bit, but gave up. I think we are seeing the last of the outside IR35 roles...
Getting SC can take up to three months in some cases. As for "must have current SC clearance" this is code for "tulip's on fire, we want to hire ASAP all the contractors fired by Reeves in July".
