Do you think I have been overcharged by the umbrella?

On the payslip issue, the problem is solved. It was the emergency tax code. I called HMRC and they changed it to a normal, cumulative tax code. The umbrella reprocessed the payslip and an extra £2500 appeared :-) :-)

Do you think I have been overcharged by the umbrella?

Fred, you may be right, my understanding was that being a share holder of a Ltd company would involve more complex tax declaration abroad. I need to research this better.

Do you think I have been overcharged by the umbrella?

northernladuk: thanks, I was just hoping to get some information over the weekend, I'll talk to them on Monday. Fred: I know, but I have a specific reason for doing that, I have to declare tax in another country and it makes it much easier for me.

Do you think I have been overcharged by the umbrella?

Hi, I received my first payslip from a known umbrella. In my pocket I'll get £3520.75 from £7500 gross, that's 47%, which seems low... I often hear people saying umbrellas pay around 60%. I admit that I don't understand the breakdown very well. Do you think I've been overcharged? Thanks, sog...

    State of the Market

I meant that I'm from the continent, here in London with a broken English, in the middle of Brexit arguments (whereby half of the voters hate me), and I thought the contract market would be hard for me to get into, but apparently I have a chance.

    State of the Market

Got my 1st contract offer 10 days ago, starting on Monday. It's in financial services, central London. Development with .NET & related things, £500/d. I had received another offer in Buckinghamshire, at the same time, £300/d but turned it down because the commute was not great, and rate lower...

    Progressive developer?

Hi, Once I noticed this event: "Progressive .NET Tutorials" https://skillsmatter.com/conferences/7235-progressive-dot-net-tutorials-2016 Today I saw a job ad saying "this organisation is looking for a progressive Back-End Developer" Back End Developer ( C#, ASP.NET, MVC ) - City of London -...

Where to look for jobs (excluding London)

Hi, I'm a .NET C# developer with more than 10 years of experience. I'm a permanent, not a contractor. I'm employed in the financial sector (on what many would call a good job, with a decent salary), but I commute to the City everyday, from Wembley, and I'm getting sick of this rush hour tube...

Getting driving license - difficulty, cost

Sri Lanka is left-hand driving, so you are used to it, which is good. The theory test costs £30. You can download an app and keep doing the questions, repeating them, until you get 90% or more. There are good apps for that. Don't forget the hazard perception test, which is part of the theory...

    Any Nokia Lumia users/fans here?

I have a 920 since June and I'm loving it. Great phone, responsive UI, good build quality, good câmera, and all the apps that I need are there. Some people find it big/bulky (my wife for example) but for me it's all right. The 925 is a thinner version of the 920 and the price is about the same.

State of the .NET market (MVC, C#, Azure)

I know for a fact that the permanent market for my skills is good. I received 3 interesting offers in March/13, after 2-3 weeks looking. Strong companies, good payment. I understand and accept that the contract market may be bad, but I wonder why there is this difference? I mean, if companies...

State of the .NET market (MVC, C#, Azure)

I appreciate all the comments, thanks for sharing your thoughts. It's helping me. My main motivation to try contracting is not money, but to be more detached from office politics and have less of the formal yearly reviews, appraisals, "team building" activities, etc. Ideally I'd like to be a...

State of the .NET market (MVC, C#, Azure)

Thanks, MyUsername. No, I'm a tech person, I don't have too much beyond that. But I'm a good dev, and get things done, with reasonably good quality. Is there any space for people like me in contracting? Or am I bound to be a perm until the market gets better(if it ever does)?
