    The Housing Ladder

Yes, if I were God then these grovelling brown-nosers would really get on my tits.

    Agency 'Cut'

When I bought my 67 Mustang, the guy's wife stayed in the day-to-day car while he handed over the keys with tears in his eyes. I had the strong feeling that his wife had said it goes or I go. I am not sure that he made the right decision. I don't have it any more BTW. Far from making me get rid...

    The Housing Ladder

When I saw the TV ad for a smoker's "Quit Kit" I thought: "You can't quit quicker than a Quit-kit quitter", but it turned out to be impossible to say.

    The Housing Ladder

I'm an atheist and I really hate quoting the bible, but: I personally regard everything from a visit to the Louvre to a good meal as "treasures in heaven", which I will have forever.

Agents and contractors: mutual need, or Hole In The Head?

Look guys, even 2 against 1 on 2 threads you can't even agree to duff me up on 1 each.

    Agency 'Cut'

If he has to do a time-consuming "trawl" he's too stupid for me to want to work for him. If your requirement is for a contractor with my skills, you can find me on Google faster than you can get sense out of an agent on the phone.

    Agency 'Cut'

You're showing a fair bit of ad hominem here. Whether my anti-agent rant has any truth in it is not at all affected by your having a big house and a sportscar. Really. You are right that there are many more contractors than there used to be. I am not one of the new monkey contractors out there...

    Agency 'Cut'

It might have been but agents have naturally shafted this possibility. That's why I can find contracts myself and then have to find an agent afterwards. I'll tell you one place they could find contractors: my CV is on the internet, and is high on the list of Google hits if you are looking for...

    Agency 'Cut'

Thanks, but actually in my Real Life I know some agents personally. They do work hard, those I know, and I don't blame them personally for making a crust this way. That doesn't alter my view of whether they are really necessary.

Agents and contractors: mutual need, or Hole In The Head?

Excuse me, but sales and marketing is what you do to beat out other agents to the money, it doesn't in itself get any jobs done. The expense of compiling one's own contracts can be kept down to the cost of a PCG subscription. And we have to manage our own cashflow anyway: without agents we might...

    The Housing Ladder

Both Platypus and Mich are interesting on not following the obvious status symbols. It is true that a big house being a sign of success is not universal, even in the UK. For example, I know a few people who are academics, all professors by now. They're not rich, but not one of them would swap...

    The Housing Ladder

Very sensible. I can only think that people in Britain all have their heads turned by the thought of how much money they might make out of their house. Or perhaps have a well-founded fear that a house that they can just afford now may be way out of their reach later in life, so they'd better...
