Advice on using an umbrella company for first time (& query about why contract with u

No, Professional Passport is just something that came up when I was searching for stuff about them. My due diligence usually amounts to Googling, "[name] + scam", "[name] + avoid". Not sure how effective that is - just better than nothing, maybe. Right - I'm getting back to the beach, these...

Advice on using an umbrella company for first time (& query about why contract with u

Thanks but it is just a four week contract and not sure how much I'll be using umbrellas so as long as these guys work for now I'll stick with them - but I'll bear it in mind for future.

Advice on using an umbrella company for first time (& query about why contract with u

Yeah, not ideal, but they've generally been good when I do get through - and very quick to get back after I rang up the agency.

Advice on using an umbrella company for first time (& query about why contract with u

It would indeed but not great enough to sacrifice 7 day payment terms, which is the one really good thing I'm getting out of the arrangement. Might as well be in nanoseconds compared to how long it usually takes via ltd company!

Advice on using an umbrella company for first time (& query about why contract with u

Hey, I did give Contractor Umbrella a ring and was happy with how they explained everything. I've ended up going with MangoPay because they seem fine and my agency said that, although they will let me use any brollie I want, the payment terms for those on their PSL list are 7 days; whereas...

Advice on using an umbrella company for first time (& query about why contract with u

Thanks for all the responses. I'll definitely check out Contractor Umbrella. Not sure about pensions - up until now I've been saving up to buy property as security.

Advice on using an umbrella company for first time (& query about why contract with u

Advice on using an umbrella company for first time (& query about why contract with u I have been offered a contract with a university client. I was told that the contract would fall under IR35 and they would try to get me a higher gross rate to cover the difference (normally I run contracts...

Will the General Election affect the state of the Contract Market?

= half of immigrants are *not* from India or China. If you think *all* the EU workers who will be put off coming to the UK (or unable to) post-Brexit will be replaced by non-EU workers, what do you think those non-EU workers are doing just now? And why would you expect EU workers to be replaced...

How to decide whether to switch to permie?

From being a good and conscientious person? Don't you think an excess of loyalty and fellow-feeling is a liability whatever the contractual arrangement? As a contractor you'll end up delivering vastly more than what is actually entailed by the contract simply because it's what needs to get...

Will the General Election affect the state of the Contract Market?

Surely the whole point of Brexit was to say we've had enough of talented Lithuanian developers coming over and taking our Laravel contracts?

How to decide whether to switch to permie?

-- Careful there! That's probably sound counsel for the most part but could be dangerous advice in the hands of, for example, the dice man. Maybe I should just roll and see what number comes up? But yes, the chance to experiment with something new, generally that's where I'm coming at this...

How to decide whether to switch to permie?

Thanks for the responses. Of course it's a personal choice & I'm not trying to crowd-source this decision! OTOH, it's worth bouncing these thoughts off around to get some perspective. Agree with @theroyale about all the points in favour of contracting. When people have asked me in the past...

How to decide whether to switch to permie?

I have a possible job offer in Barcelona & after 7 years of contracting, I'm considering it. I know the city quite well (I spent 6 months there as an Erasmus student). In the UK, contracting has been my preferred way of working. If I had to sum up my reasons: better rates, more interesting...

Is it bad not to have a signed/countersigned copy of a contract?

I just wanted to close this off and note that I was paid as normal without any hassle. Thanks again for all the advice and the links to reading on implied contracts - it can't hurt to be more clued up though hopefully it is something I will avoid repeating!

Is it bad not to have a signed/countersigned copy of a contract?

Thanks, that's encouraging. Two questions, 1. "The fact you turned up and the agent acknowledged I believe means there is a contract in place with the previous terms still in effect". - What do you mean by 'the agent acknowledged'? My time sheets have been signed off by the client (they are...
