Maximum duration of contracting for public sector

Just stumbled on this thread. I am currently in a quango on an outside IR35 engagement. There are contractors here who have been doing very little for 8+ years and one guy who has been here 11 years as a Lead Architect and is absolute garbage.

    State of the Market

I completely concur with that. I am the lead BA/Product Owner on a FinOps programme. Show and Tell tomorrow, and literally 3 out of the team from the consultancy need constant spoon feeding, can't even update a story in the backlog and take an absolute age to do something which I would get...

How to handle a 250 mile round trip to work fortnightly on an Inside IR35 contract?

What is the matter with contractors post Covid? Pre-2020 I (like many) left at 5am or earlier on a Monday morning, 4 nights away in a hotel then back at base Friday evening or if you were lucky a days WFH on the Friday. Now in 2026 we have a 4 page thread about 1 measly trip once a fortnight...

    Tax rises?

    Tax rises?

Rumour today that those homeowners in Band G or Band H which have their council tax doubled! I always thought council tax was a payment for local services, not a mechanism of taxation.

    Tax rises?

Gambling taxes Reduced VAT threshold Removal of £500 dividend allowance Higher tax for LLPs Maintain £60,000 max pension contribution but removal of x3 previous years un-used allowances Adding VAT on mobility scheme Council tax rates replaced with 0.45% charge of todays property value Reduction...

UK economy shrank by 0.3% in April

Reeves cannot raise income tax, VAT or NI, but these are the following things currently under consideration (KPMG currently doing the IA). -Dividend tax rates to reflect income tax rates. -Council tax 25% single person discount removed for those living in Band D properties or above. -Removal of...

Hi DitchTheBox Out of interest, who did you use for your MVL? I may be considering the same and wondered if you would recommend who you used. Thanks is advance.

    Contracting at Nationwide

Am I reading all this correctly!? The OP states he is looking to go back to Nationwide because... Needs 2 years of day rate pay It was easy last time in 2013 Didn't have to do an awful lot of work to do previously which was a plus point Has been working from home for the last 2 years on easy...

    SJD and Free Agent

Yes I know there are various threads re SJD but in all honesty they have been fine with me over the years so not had a problem with them. Today I am told that because their online portal was hacked, I need to move across to FreeAgent (via SJD). I was actually quite happy with the spreadsheet...

    Interview red flags

When it becomes clear they are after free consultancy as opposed to an interview for gig. 'Can you advise us what to do in this situation' 'How would we go about X in future' 'How long would you think it would take to bring in this capability' 'In your experience, which one of these is better...
