Advice needed - how to break into Project Management mainstream..

With your experience I don't know why you couldn't get a contract Junior PM role.. From my experience it is possible, yes the market is bad, but you dont; need to work for £50 a day to get experience. Would you consider working as a PMO or Project Support? You may be too senior but if you do...
