    AWS profits

Simple, because it's old tech mainframe, just ignore it. By the next time it comes round again, everybody has moved on. Rinse and repeat.

    AWS profits

The government did have such a department, it was called ITSA, it was given to HP. For HMRC to rebuild a mainframe team, they needed to know what courses were required and who could provide such training, because they didn't know.

    job market

A month, damn, how will you cope? I've been out to 2 years now. I managed to get 2 contracts offered 12 months ago, but health issue (I went completely blind in 1 eye, which took 12 months to correct), meant I had to turn them down. I'm just re-adjusting life and retiring (pensions kick in in...

    Smart meter not communicating

Mine (OVO) stopped sending readings, both gas and electric, in August. A complete PITA to get an engineer to visit, so far 4 arranged and no-shows. For every missed visit I get £40, so can't complain. I spoke to Alan, from the Extra Care Team, last week, it turns out that the format of the...

    State of the Market

Whilst it might be news to the government, it isn't to public sector civil servants, why do you think we have IR35?. It's due to them hating self employed contractors. HMRC is using non UK FTC's in large numbers and that includes its suppliers. But they never learn, it might be cheaper per week...

    State of the Market

If UK hirers don't hire many contractors, then they don't know what to look for (outside of a tick-box checklist or recommendation). I used to specialise in working for clients that don't have experience with analysis /architect /testing for difficult projects. They want the work doing, but...

    Shortest contract?

Not the shortest, but a friend had a 6 week contract, basically sat in a store room to use up the budget. PS gig, so use it or lose it from the next financial year.

    Repairing car paintwork

Depends on how old the car is, it's value and how many are being broken. I got a replacement bonnet for £50 fitted + £20 gas money. The old one was scratched and dented, not a mark on the new one.

Contracts with NHS have always been crap but not this bad!

Feck me, that was years ago. Yes it was Viqu and I walked after about 6 weeks. The trust came under investigation for bullying management.

    Scrum

20+ participants with a new scrum master, daily stand up was a sit down affair for 3 hours, with people coming and going, usually for a brew. Typical PS BS.
