What's the legal situation with e-book versions of books you own?

I've fond memories reading many of Asimov's books from my dad's collection and wanted to get them on my Kindle since I don't want to clutter up several shelves. But sadly Amazon have only a tiny fraction of his works on Kindle - no idea why!

With software/music I am allowed to make a backup copy (I think that's the current view anyway) - what's the deal with books? If a book is only available electronically as a dodgy free PDF and I buy a paperback copy, does that make it any less dodgy? Or am I stuck with the choices of reading a hard copy or making my own moral justification why acting strictly speaking illegally is OK?!

It's a good question, I lost my entire Neil Young collection in 1997, over-eager removal guy ditched the lot, and I was living in a tulipe hole area, having noisy neighbour probs I was so keen to get out I wasn't bothered then.

Still bought 'em tho - no qualms about ripping them off the 'net since I do feel I am in the right. However, legally I fear I am not. But, at the end of the day, I don't give a toss.

Try the Kindle book collections on abay, you can buy Scifi collections on there too. about 15000 .mobi format books for about £2.

I recently bought a 5000 .mobi scifi book collection on there.

I assume those are as [il]legal as downloading free versions? People just collating free versions and charging a couple of quid for saving you the time?
