I have my site under 2 URLs, I want the search engines to ignore one.

I have a site hosted on the amazon EC2, so they give me a URL of...

    http://ec2-xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx.compute-1.amazonaws.com

I have my URL and forward onto the amazon hosted server.

As the site is made up of 20,000 pages webmaster tools tells me I have 20,000 incoming links from amazonaws.com and I think that is screwing up my SEO. I also do not want an exact duplicate site.

I have tried banning the URL but I am sure that just goes from the root directory of the server.

Anyone know how I can stop the amazon URL from being crawled?

    Cheers

Why not use apache mod_rewrite to change url from http://ec2-xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx.compute-1.amazonaws.com to http://yoursite.com in the httpd.conf file? URL Rewriting Guide - Apache HTTP Server

Trying to muck about with the amazon security settings so that it only lets traffic through from my nameserver but that aint working just now.

I'll have a look at apache but that would require me installing administrating apache on the machines which it does not need so far.

Using tomcat and might see if I can restrict IPs in that.

With Tomcat you could try this UrlRewriteFilter - Rewrite URL's in Java Web Application Servers

Use a virtual host for the domain you want google to see.

The requests to the other one will go to the default host which you can block with robots.txt if you want, although there won't be any content so why bother.

          Edit: tomcat linky http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-6.0-...ing-howto.html

While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

You could also try adding a canonical link which tells Google which URL you would prefer they use.

                Bingo!!

                Cheers

Took this solution (after a xmas plan b break) as it was one line change to the server.xml and a one line change to the hosts file. easiest change and easiest to rollback. Spot the contractor.

Is this your SKA-beater, if you'll excuse the non-General frivolity?

                    Next year Rodders.

Could be. A company that produced something similar got 2 million in VC and it has not worked out for them, I think mine is better but it is more a hobby for me.
