Switching wholesale from laptop to tablet?

I am thinking of switching to a tablet, since I see little use for my own laptop nowadays. I do use a computer all day at work but it is always the client's computer.

I know it's up to me to spec my requirement and verify that the proposed hardware and software fits, but I wonder if anyone has any experience of this?

I'm sitting on site here with the client's laptop and my tablet. I have a tablet cover which is a keyboard/stand, and it is enough for me. Back at home I have an old laptop which is basically used as a backup/storage device.

    So, yes, very do-able.
…Maybe we ain’t that young anymore

The only thing I will say is that I find tablets great for consuming - e.g movies, data, presentations etc.

However if you want to create I find them not so great and prefer a laptop.

Therefore I reckon the best option is one of those laptops with a detachable screen so you get both - in 1 package!

Indeed, but I find myself creating little or nothing on my own computer now.

My only reservation would be movies: currently I usually buy them on DVD and rip them (then give the DVD to a charity shop). Downloading seems impractical: I am very mobile so I do not have frequent returns to a broadband landline; in most countries you can only get a PAYG SIM if you don't have a local bank account, and downloading a movie on a PAYG SIM, even a local one, can get pretty expensive.

I have a Lenovo Helix, so it's a hybrid. You can detach the tablet from the keyboard. Using the tablet on it's own is fine for reading, light surfing etc but if I want to write an email then I connect the keyboard. Not sure I could get by without a keyboard.

If I was after a hybrid now then I would probably go for the Surface Pro, thinking of buying the missus one actually.

I've got a portable DVD player for the rare times I need an actual DVD.

I was a bit cynical about tablets, but I've had one a year now and it is pretty much all I use at home. As said I'll fire up the laptop or even the desktop if I want to write something beyond a few words or do some useful work. I've remote desktop'd from a tablet into a server before, but it's just too much of a PITA to do anything without a mouse and keyboard.

            Best to have both.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

Agree with good ol' wishy-washy Charlie Brown. Tablets great for consuming but laptop needed for generating, ie. work.

I agree too, but in my case the client provides it.

Got a Surface 3 which I'm very happy with. Good for both scenarios - home and work.
