Did you know banks were bailed out in 8 months to the tune equivalent to 5% the UK has donated in it's entire history towards scientific & engineering endeavour.

Think about that for a moment.
I have. The banks are a great case of the flaws of the TBTF paradigm, not an example for everyone else on how to run a business. The US went even further and balled out its trashy auto firms which are still unable to do well, even with its support.

Looking at the benefits accruing to the few firms who do perform well as a result of plunder is just looking at part of the equation.

Rolls Royce, they are leaders in aero engine technology. Let's make the funds available for a engine that produces less NOC's than a after dinner cigar.

    Try telling nature that.

Waiting a minute I'm agreeing with you. Fate, it doesn't exists. I'm in control of my own destiny!!

Time for a cuppa I'm hungry. AAhhhh wait at minute, I see what's happening there. I'm not hungry at all. Shut-up stomach.

That would have been the moral thing to do maybe; but if the Yanks didn't do likewise at the same time it would have been stupid and catastrophic for the UK - The US and anyone else willing to be more pragmatic and prop up their banks, however undeserving and blameworthy, would have cleaned up at our expense (literally)!
