One of them only detects gammas & cosmic rays, so if that fecker starts clicking* you know the excrement has hit the aircon & no mistake.

*ZeitMater's radioiodine treatment sent it apetulip crazy, so it really does detect stuff.

No. It's in a "the amount of radiation, though detectable is still very very tiny". Perhaps the guy with the Geiger counter was smoking a cigarette?

Sometimes you just can't be too careful.

However, looking at the plumes of fallout from the Nevada atmospheric tests in the 1940s & 50s, I don't suppose there's much to worry about from Fukushima.

Is that in a "we're all fooked so why worry" kind of way?

And of course if anyone takes their own gigacounter to the beach and records a 500% increase in radiation levels that's just nonsense right?

A 500% increase in gigas is certainly worth writing home about. That's could be as much as half a tera.

Whether a 500% increase in radioactivity is worth worrying about depends on the baseline it's being compared with. 150 counts per minute is apparently less than you get from flying, so probably not a big deal.
