[QUOTE=suityou01;1523095]The last two gigs I have done have been total and utter nightmares, being 10 nil down before you even start. I think this is contracting, ie they only get the contractors in when the tulip really hits the fan. At least then when it does, it's the contractors fault and not the permies that totally fooked it.
    /QUOTE]

I never enjoy projects anymore. Happiness was the days when work meant an empty rack and a load of Sun equipment in the loading bay.

Unless you are on board for the project initiation or have influence in the wider programme you are always going to be screwed if you pick up a stream in a programme that was planned by some one else... It's important that you use assumptions and risk logs properly and ensure you are given a project that can be deliverable, IMO Its better to be sacked for calling the programme manager a donkey in an open meeting, than taking his figures and project plan as gospel and failing to deliver...

You changed 'signing on?' to 'cottaging with Suity?'

I think Zoiderman may be right about you?

Give me a greenfield project next FFS otherwise I'll have to do my own thing. There's something quite soul destroying after a while knowing that you cannot fail to get a gig at 2k plus a week from surfing Jobserve. The
possibility of failing is what personally drives me.

Seems a very depressing attitude to me. I genuinely enjoy writing code in a similar way I imagine a plasterer or carpenter or landscape gardener enjoys making stuff. Obviously that makes me a total nerd, but I'd rather be a nerd and happy than a miserable big-shot.
I love building stuff too but i've had too much good work derailed to put my heart and soul into it anymore.

I've devoted my remaining work time to making as much cash as I can. This is freeing in more ways than one. It's worked out really well for me in the 6 years i've been working like this.

One bad thing you can do is let those in control know you are enjoying something - then they know what your carrot is.

I solve problems in interesting (to me) ways - and I keep quiet about it. I have been to hell and back to reach this point and method of working. Whatever gets you through the day!
