Used to work for Norwich Union (just as they became Aviva - which also happens to be the name of a charity shop just round the corner from their HQ!) and was chatting to a couple of Architects from there last night ... theyve been off to Mumbai quite a few times lately........

This was my point too.
If the Pru decide to move much off the "low value" back office & IT work offshore thats fair enough. Presumably those jobs higher up the food chain would remain in the country.
Rightly, the Pru rejected Norwich Union's (AVIVA) offer to merge a few weeks ago , though i suspect that "offer" has not gone away. If there was a merger with NU you can kiss goodbye to all the "value added" jobs too.

My experience of NU mergers (yes i was one of their victims in the past) is that they close down everything that is not Norwich based regardless. The PRU's IT is largely London & Reading based, these would be the first offices to get the chop. Ironically if the PRU merged or was taken over by a foreign competitor most of these value-added jobs would remain in the country.

Nowt wrong with Norwich. It's a beautiful city. Out of the way, but far from the rat race. Plus more pubs than you can shake a stick at, most selling proper beer rather than that watered down Australian sh*te.

Norwich is a nice place but full of chavs.... Riverside is tacky (but you'll definitely get laid)... Prince of Wales road on a weekend night is great if you like watching drunk girls swearing and starting fights... nicer places are out of the way like Reedham Ferry on a summers day....

I don't understand, inflation is low, everyone's making money out of property, job creation is fantastic, taxes are low, so many positions we import labour, the NHS running like clockwork...

At least the proposed merger between Prudential and Norwich Union (AVIVA) is not going to happen (well not just yet!). If it did everything will be India or Norwich bound and there would be NO IT left.

It's to allow the 700 workers there to move up the value chain.

Instead of doing simple tasks in finance and IT, they are freed to become brain surgeons, astronauts, theoretical physicists (and for the really gifted ones), members of parliament.

So it's a good thing and everybody wins.
