    I had a java course and the guy doing it knew his stuff - damned good at it and had learned his trade well. Did it for a month here and there, had time off then did it again. Seemed a nice life style.

    +1 the idea that you go in as an expert and can't learn anything in a contract is just wrong.

    Every contract should add something to you skill set. The question is are you careful in the contracts you take and have an actual.plan or do you just take the first contract that comes along.

    You need to do the former to have a long term career.

    I try to ensure that after each new contract I have an enhanced cv with additional hands-on skills.
    I do on-line courses and read-up too, but wouldn't claim any new skills acquired that way unless I'd used them on an active project.

    So I'm permie these days but...

    After being part of a pilot for online training (which I took full advantage of), it looks like it will be rolled out company wide next month. Not restricted to the skills I use in the role I and others in IT can choose to do as many of the courses we like, unlimited.

    Gone are the days of paying for my own training so if and when I choose to go back to contracting I'll have an enhanced CV with several new skills added (hands on as well not just watching a video).

    What y'all doing with training if at all?
