The real issues are quality of life, flexibility and sustainability (you might get 500/day now, but would you get as much from the next contract?). - XLMonkey

Have a look at http://calculator.contractoruk.com/ where you can play around some numbers, obviously it is pretty general, but say your £500/day contract was for a year (44 weeks) then to earn the same as a permie would require a salary of £90,556 - so a pay rise it is then

As said this is general as doesn't account for your specific situation or training etc, speak to an accountant to see what it means in your case.

how secure is this cushy permie number?

how rare are the skills that you have?

how much work is out there?

Yes, I went from 70ish k plus bonus etc to 700/day. But, the driver for change was boredom and the need to control my own destiny rather than (just) the money.

The real issues are quality of life, flexibility and sustainability (you might get 500/day now, but would you get as much from the next contract?).

At the salary you're on at the moment, you can live very comfortably. You enjoy the work, good work-life balance. Not sure that there's a compelling argument for changing, really.

At the moment I enjoy my permie job. It is fun and laid back. I earn 54k basic, bonus and stuff means I made about 62k last year. I get 22 + 8 holidays a year. Last year had two weeks training and two weeks for conferences. I also work from home a lot which is enjoyable. Had about 8 weeks last year just free time to catch up on technology. Which is interesting to me and makes for a good day. I can also be flexible ie sleep in, pop to gym, long lunch and then work a bit later, catch up on weekend... although I'm not overloaded with work to be honest.

So the cash difference would be about 40k... of which 40% would be taxed away.

Any of you guys had to make similar decisions?
Stay where you are. One less would-be contractor to worry about

EDIT: I am sure somebody in the board will provide all the figures and legal/practical reasons to explain why your permie job is very good. Me, I can't be bothered!
