    This.

I make a concerted effort to keep in touch with people.

Go for coffee, a beer or lunch with them. Be blatant when you’re looking to move and reach out to people asking if they know of anything you might be interested in.

Above all else, be easy going, friendly and the sort of person that people want to work with.

My last two gigs were through my network. I also recommend other contractors that I knew I could work with who were pretty much waved in on my word.

I have two LinkedIn accounts - one more personal, where contacts are my network of contractor buddies.

Second one is my company one, listed on CV, kept purely for agents.

    Keep the two purely segregated.

Do it 100%, also do this:

    - make sure you have a good network, don't connect with everyone - focus on ex-colleague's you have worked with AND want to work with again and recruiters specialising in your area
    - have relevant skills on your profile, those REXX scripts from 1996 aren't useful and just attract keyword warriors
    - Post to say what you are looking for and where
    - What previous people said, change your settings to say that you are looking, what for and where

Sort of the whole purpose of it, isn't it?

I have certainly got a couple of contracts in the last couple of years when people in my network noticed I was available.

If you've not been managing your LinkedIn network properly then it's not really going to help. If you've used it like FB and just added every Tom dick and Harry and been linking pointless vids and memes you've diluted your audience. The idea is to network, not just bung a desperate ask for a gig. I'd imagine the fact you are having to ask this means you've got a bit more work to get your base network set up first.

Not entirely sure how effective that is but that is the background settings I was referring to. Doesn't hurt to do the other updates too for thems that don't have recruiter accounts
