Because juries had become largely unrepresentative of the population. If the only people not getting out of service were the unemployed career criminals/scroungers it is hardly surprising the some of the verdicts returned could be a bit odd.
You forgot students and retired people. I knew a few people who were called up when they were 18 and others who were retired before the rules changed

In other words the demographic of a jury use to be day time TVs audience.

I had Jury service last month at Southwark CC. A lot of waiting around - bring laptop/ipad/book etc. I got called for 2 cases - judge informed us that they would be long cases (at least 8-10 weeks) and asked if anyone had an issue with that, to discuss with him. My name was pulled out of the hat twice and on both occasion the judge left me go after explaining my situation - one man band / financial hardship etc. Was excused after two days and IPSE paid £500/day for 2 days which took the sting out of missing two days rate (business interruption insurance - part of ISPE membership.

Turn up in a Klan T shirt might do the trick ?

As you can only defer now and not get out of it completely, you are allowed to refuse to do trials that look like they would take more than 2 weeks.

I know a lot of people who have been called up who years ago would have completely got out of it. All but one agreed to do a trial over 2 weeks. The trial lasted 6 months.

Another did 4 days of 3 different trials and 2 days of sitting around, then when she was allocated another 13 days for one trial told them firmly she was not doing it and didn't have to.

My Mrs got called up for it. Would have been hassle because I'd have been stuck with childcare then.

Wrote them a letter saying the usual stuff, loss of earnings, small business etc and they said ok then dont worry she doesn't have to do.

I think its the same north and south of the border. I was excused for probably the same reasons as you, propriertor of your own business and the only employee, cannot take the time off.

You will be paid, but if you are on a good contractor rate dont expect full reimbursement, and it could tie you up for longer than the 2 weeks.

I was "deferred" but that was 3 years ago. Not been picked since (checks letter box)

I got out of it by stating exactly that. Well that and the fact that I was contracting in Europe on a time critical project. I think you got paid around £50 per day all in, if I recall correctly. But this was in England and more than 10yrs ago.
