To be fair more and more insurers are realising there is a whole load of people who are self-employed or run small companies using a laptop and a mobile phone who present no additional insurance risk to them, so they may as well make money from it.

Hi, doing this necropost for the benefit of searchers.

I have home insurance with Sainsbury's. Called and told them that my house is also the registered address of my ltd company. They said fine, so long as the house is not actually used for running the business, for example holding stock or business cash. I said no. They made a note of it but does not affect the price of insurance.

    Jim.

Lots of people use their home address as a company address and also work from home to one extent or another. I've seen a survey of a large number of insurance companies and they all said there is no problem at all with this.

The only time you have to start considering your insurance (and other issues) is if your company stores equipment/stock at home or you have people visit your home for business meetings. If you don't do any of that then don't worry about it.

If they ever challenge you then just say that it's only the registered office for receiving mail and no business is carried out at that address.

Have you actually checked your insurance to see what it says, particularly the exclusion bit?

I do have Professional Indemnity Insurance and Contractors Liability Insurance that covers Employers Liability, Public/Products Liability and Pollution Liability form QDOS.

I thinks that’s a good idea letting the insurance company know that I have registered my company and running a business but will not have any visitors.

    Thanks.

I told my home insurance company that it's used for business purposes, just me using the place with no visitors. It didn't cost anything extra. Worth letting them know though.

The fact that you work from home for a business you own would invalidate your insurance not the fact that your home address is your registered office.

It doesn't matter that you work from home irregularly it's just the fact you do so and in layman's speak own the business.

Get insurance unwritten by the likes of Axa, Hiscox and UK General Insurance and you will be covered for doing computer work at home. The rest of the underwriters such as Aviva and Esure only tend to cover you for clerical work.

However no mainstream policy will cover you for business visitors.

Home Insurance and registered business address

I’m about to get renew my home insurance and my business is registered at my home address.

I do work from home now and again but do not claim one of my rooms as an office expense.

Would this invalidate my home insurance as its not been used as a business but only registered?

Or would I need to get a different kind of insurance?

    Thanks.
