    So far as I am aware, HMRC has used debt recovery companies for some time now. I have experienced it but you treat them in the same way that you would treat any company trying to recover any debt.

    You either;

    a) acknowledge that you owe the debt and pay it
    b) deny that you owe the money, either in full or part and challenge it with the originator
    c) put your head in the sand until they knock on the door, then refuse to let them in without a court order

    Two of these are good ideas, one not so much. I'll leave you to figure out which.
