    VAT reclaim on international flight

My accountant is on hols for a week! And I could do with some advice right now…

In September I booked a return flight to Texas – this was purely a business trip. Now because this was an international flight, can I reclaim the VAT or will this be a “zero rate” expense – I am unsure about this and could do with some advice.

Also… I travelled to the USA twice on May 2005 – can I reclaim VAT on theses flights if they are out of the current VAT quarter - what is the time limit on reclaiming past VAT expenses.

I'm pretty sure that if you bought your ticket in the UK then you can reclaim the VAT on it. If you bought it elsewhere you can probably still reclaim it but the processes are different not least because VAT(or equivalent) rates vary across countries and US states.

I'm also sure that you can claim back VAT from the previous quarter so long as the discrepancy (in VAT value) doesn't go over a certain value (I think it is 2K but best to check that one with HMRC)

You could always ask them, they will tell you the correct answer.

do you have a receipt with a VAT number on it an an itemised VAT amount.

If you don't, then the answer is no, because there isn't any VAT on airline tickets.

There is no VAT on any form of travel (rail / bus / air), except taxis (and only if the taxi firm is registered for VAT

Right. You beat me to it. There is no VAT to claim back. But you can stick the flight on expenses if it was for work, so least you dont have to pay tax on it.
