Options for listening to ITunes library

My ipod classic has finally bitten the dust & it appears that Apple no longer make any ipod devices other than the ipod touch.

Apparently it's because everyone streams these days but having tried Spotify, I'm much happier listening to my own static library.

So, the question is, can I port all my songs on iTunes so I can play them on a more generic player? Or do I just get an iPhone ?(and the cynic in me says that's the real reason for Apple's decision to pull the plug on the iPod).

    Plex might be a solution:

What format have you stored your iTunes music in?

IIRC you can just copy the songs from your iTunes library directories and play them. I believe that Apple removed DRM some time ago. You might need to convert non-mp3 files to mp3 format but I'm sure there are plenty of free utilities to do that. Or buy another iPod on eBay. The iPod touch is an iPhone without the phone part, a nice device.

See if it's worth reviving your current one, if it's the battery or hard drive causing the problem.

Can also upgrade to SSD for more storage space and better battery life.

If it looks a bit tricky then there must be 3rd parties offering such a repair service if Apple themselves no longer do for their older stuff, at a price that makes it worth considering.

Will be interesting to hear how you get on, or if others have done similar. My iPod Classic is still going strong, though I only use it in a dock at home these days.
Maybe tomorrow, I'll want to settle down. Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.

Aye, iTunes is just a database pointing to the music files so can easily use a different front end if decide iTunes is no longer favourite. I have my music files on a NAS too as primary backup, with iTunes in a VM that has a drive letter mapped to the NAS folder.

Only thing I had to do to get iTunes to work with my pre-existing music collection ripped from CDs was to convert the FLAC files into Apple Lossless, which I have in a sub folder for importing into iTunes so the original ripped files are untouched in case anything tries to DRM it.
