Were you getting more than 65% income from that umbrella?
Contact your accountant, they will be able to explain why you were contacted."I can put any old tat in my sig, put quotes around it and attribute to someone of whom I've heard, to make it sound true."

If you have your own accountant, it would be worth taking all the information to them (if you don't want to divulge it here), it's also a good idea to try to contact the company who was doing your accounts/payroll at the time that HMRC are interested in.…Maybe we ain’t that young anymoreComment

There is no substitute here for:
a. getting advice and
b. organising
You have opening enquiry letters and HMRC will not let go now.
You will have to answer them and deal with the consequences.
Consequences are settle, litigate, discuss with HMRC and then settle or litigate.
Trying to do that without a clear picture of the costs and outcomes is not advisable.
Getting information can be expensive. Organising to pay for that as a group is sensible (and supportive).
One or a group of you need to grasp the challenge.
Advisers can be found via Google or here.
Yes, I am connected with such an adviser, but others are out there.Best Forum Adviser & Forum Personality of the Year 2018.

I am very angry at HMRC as they have plenty of laws to stop these schemes. Yet choose not to.
Webberg gives good advice above. I am not sure what else to suggest.Comment
