    Antivirus software

Does anybody claim antivirus software as an expense?

Just had my auto-renewal from McAfee & it's £69.99. It protects the laptop I use for work plus our home laptop (which I use for my accounts but it's mainly the family pc).
Never thought about putting it through the company before so just wondered if this is a ligit expense.

I don't. I use the extra licences on home kit so percentage wise the 'work' use is too low.

Would you buy it if you were a permie?

I'd consider Trend Titanium or Kaspersky before McAfee, as for the expenses side, I'll let others give you an answer to that one

I've had contracts in the past that stipulated that AV SW must be running on all PCs used for client work. I take that to mean it is an allowable business expense. The fact that my own PCs are connected to my work network at home leads me to consider them to be required to be covered as well...

All hardware and software used by MyCo is paid for by MyCo and is recorded as an asset or consumable, as appropriate. It never occurred to me to do it any other way, to be honest.

If you are connecting to client equipment, I'd say it was an absolute must.

We're a McAfee Parter so get a few NFR (Not For ReSale) licenses including SPAM Filter (MXLogic)

Indeed but if it has multiple licences that cover home kit and you would still purchase the same option as a permie I.e the work kit cover is incidental then you can't really claim its wholly and exclusively? If it's a single licence that goes on the work laptop on them yeah fill your boots.

Would depend on exactly what is purchased and how it's used.

Indeed, and to be fair AV isn't something I would buy
