Pensions get a bad rap due to past miss-selling scandals and poor returns.
A pension is like any long term investment and needs love, attention and maintenance. If you pay into a pension and never look at it until you retire it will be in an awful state, just the same as a property would without any maintenance.
If you are a higher rate tax payer, for every 60p you pay in the Government top it up to £1.00. This 40% uplift is unique to pensions and is a huge benefit. If you run your own Ltd Co this can pay in for you and it appears on the accounts as if it were an expense. It gets money out tax and National Insurance free.
Even if your pension invests in cash, this is still a substantial return and cannot be discounted.
How much you pay in is dependent on your situation, but they should definitely be considered as a complement to ISA’s and property.

I'll really be screwed when the 10% of my savings invested in a pension collapses?Originally posted by sasguru View Post

You're as correct about my intelligence as my level of wealth, I have to give you that. It's a little sad for you that you see 'poor' as an insult.Originally posted by MaryPoppinsI'd still not breastfeed a naziOriginally posted by vetranUrine is quite nourishingComment

Scarey stuff!
If you plot the debt as a proportion of GDP the graph becomes far less scary and in fact our current debt is not as high as in the past especially just after the 2nd world war.Originally posted by rootsnall View Post

Oh and you are stupid if you think investing in property is about capital gains (which it may well be in the long run) rather than inflation-proofing future rental earnings.Last edited by sasguru; 7 December 2012, 16:52.Hard Brexit now!

Mods could you add a new option to the poll "I don't need one because I'm pretending to be wealthy"?Originally posted by MaryPoppinsI'd still not breastfeed a naziOriginally posted by vetranUrine is quite nourishingComment
