        Stacker,

if you look in the back of the economist, in the back few pages it gives you stats on what countries are printing what money and by what percentage, it makes shocking reading

the thing is, our cousin across the pond is driving this as he is printing like mad, helicopter ben loves it, and therefore as a result everyone else has to print as well otherwise their currencies will become expensive against our cousins

        Milan.

I'm sure it does, but what I want to know is, why isn't this M3/M4 - GDP calculation used as a headline measure of inflation?

because then everybody would know the truth, we can't have that can we.

and besides, our cousins across the pond, within the last few months stopped (for ever) reporting their M3 numbers, make what you want of that !

That doesn't stack up as a reason. For a start, it isn't in the interest of the tory press to keep it quiet.

the job for the rulers of the country is to remove anything from the inflationary measurement basket which rises in % higher than the % they want inflation to be reported as

Erm, you don't read the tory press then I take it?

One paper have their own measure of inflation, and gives a similar result to that mentioned earlier in this thread (about 8%).

But we aren't talking about the basket, we are talking about the precise measure.
