However he does have a point if the OP is a contractor who needs some level of compatibility with client corps.
That's one of the reasons why I don't use linux or a Mac - No client I've ever been at in the last 20 years has required me to use them, it's nearly all been MS/Windows/Office/PC.
Funnily enough that was exactly my motivation for choosing a Mac in the first place. I hated the PC at work so much that I didn't want that experience in my leisure time too. I was working at a bank at the time, and contractors didn't get access from home, so compatibility wasn't a concern.

So, what runs on Windows 7 that doesn't run on XP? I've seen software which I might use for development which runs on XP but not on Win7, but nothing the other way round.
