Oh dear, that, in and of itself, betrays a certain lack of understanding. If, for example(s), the system holds the password in the clear, is transferring it to another system in a fixed field, and thereby creates this requirement for an upper limit in length then that is a significant design fault. (And they desperately need someone like me on a significant daily rate to explain the basics of security programming to them )

Sorry, but there is absolutely no excuse for an upper limit on password length.

I shall go further to assert that if this system really has such a small upper limit, then the security can be trivially compromised.
Insanity: repeating the same actions, but expecting different results.

Ever used RACF? Has a maximum of 8 characters for a password yet this product has the highest security levels available. This is why mainframes don't get hacked or cracked and big businesses still keep their corporate data there.
Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.

Yes, I've even installed it a few times, and have written my own password cracker, like I say, it's trivial. IIRC last upgrade I did to it was to handle mixed case passwords.

Are you saying there are words longer than 8 letters?

          *faints*

I've seen much of the rest of the world. It is brutal and cruel and dark, Rome is the light.

Eh! Its always handled mixed case passwords. What platform and OS does it run on and under?

Not sure I agree with that. I nearly left IT when as a permie I was stressed out by obnoxious condescending micro-managers. Now as a contractor I am respected, and the job varies from okay to enjoyable. I suspect contractors are less stressed, as there's less politics, and we just leave if the tulipe starts flying.

                    Mmmm. I'd add:

A colleague who does not wash, or change his clothes, and smokes, and consequently stinks the place out. One friend told me that a female colleague smelt so bad that everyone bought her some soap as a present.

A colleague who displays a "stuff you I have no time to be sociable to the likes of you" attitude.

                    Condescending managers.
