What's the point in life sentences..

If one can get out in less than 5 years? Like that would be just about 20% of a short life span (50 years)

Should parole exist and if it should should the minium be alot higher?

The point with a life sentence is that you can never completely serve it. When you come out on parole you are out on licence which is not the same as having served your full sentence. Offend again and you could be returned to gaol to continue the original sentence quite apart from any new sentence for the later offence.

But why bother? if they reoffend they will be going back to jail anyway regardless of their parole status. Plus if they had not been let out in the first place they could not have reoffended

While i can understand paroles on lesser sentences (for non repeat offenders) if someone got life their crime is normally a pretty serious one against society, can see no justifiable reason to release them in under 20 years.

            > if they reoffend

Depends what they do - not all crimes carry a custodial sentence. In theory you could go back inside for littering.

They should scrap the time 'life sentence', as it's just a joke. Instead they should adopt 99 or 100 year sentences without chance of parole. That way the punishment is clear.

It makes sense in some cases.

Life is mandatory for murder, whether that be a mercy killing or calculated offing or a crazed assault.

Parole terms allow judges to consider these things.

Most murderers are not repeat offenders. (Phsycos notwithstanding)

They can keep the parole option. Actually, I thought parole was intended to keep prisoners behaving proper; the chance of freedom preventing them from going nuts and chopping up the guards.

This raises the question of what the purpose of prison is; is it to punish or is it to reform?
If it's the former, then it doesn't matter whether or not they are likely to repeat; justice must be done. If it's the latter, then it has some purpose.

What about a 3rd option? ......to protect - by removing the muderer from society so they cannot re-offend , which is why all of this parole/early release is total b0ll0cks
