I don`t see a car as a status symbol at all. Having said that, impressions matter in business. I mean who on first appearance seems more successful, someone driving an S Reg Ford with a dent in it, or someone who takes a client out to lunch in an M Powered BMW? Sure, I know it`s BS but impressions matter in business.

Not that long ago I drove a D reg BMW around just for the hell of it, many people hated it, but it was a great topic of discussion.

You could say the same about those who dislike BMW`s because of the image. If many people drove one they`d think a llittle differentlty
Have driven several BMs 3s and 5s and can never see what the fuss is about - they are fine, but not that much better than other cars, definately a triumph of marketing. They are also very common and in my book, decidedly blue-collar aspirant barrow-boy cars. Nothing says "image obsessed tosser" like a BM can and whilst that is plainly not true of all drivers, some stereotypes have a foundation in truth. As for impressing clients, I prefer to do that with my work, because you never know, the client may think like I do :-)

Why use extremes? I had a mortgage broker mate (sadly died) who could afford anything he liked but he stuck to an A6 because he didn't want to give the impression that he charged too much.

The 3 series is more common than the Ford Mondeo but saying that I appreciate it’s a good car, perhaps best in class so I would have one. I don't think the same can be said for the Z4 if you want to class it as a pure sports car... flashy spivmobile maybe.

        HTH.

Yar, wish I had bought one of the cars the dealers were trying to ditch for £14k however. I could OF garaged it until such an individual received a nice industrial accident payout (such a from a lathe or drilling accident) and went shopping for a perfect sportscar for their class. Because they wouldn`t have internet access they wouldn`t know the value of the car so they would think they were getting a bargain at 23k, especially if I provided a free stainless steel exhaust that makes a racket but zaps power......and of course a boiler suits with an S2000 logo

            I'm only kidding too.

If you like the S2000, buy one.

boxster - great car but for 10K it'll be pretty old so could turn into a nightmare.
BMW - no thanks. Not a fan.
S2000 - that's the 1 for me. Good value for money.

Will test drive one in the next couple of weeks.

              thanks for all your help.

              much appreciated.
Beware if you fit in it.
I was unsure of this so I went to a dealer and sat in one - I do not fit.
I am looking for something similar and I have to disregard the wonderful S2000 which I really fancied for the great engine and I like the angular design too.
I am not so fond of rounded car designs - but it seems a 350Z is the best car at the moment - I know I fit in that.

But I am also thinking of a BMW Z3M coupe - projects different image from a normal Z3/Z4.

Too fat or too tall? Bare in mind Clarkson got in at 6ft 5 and he's not very thin

PS SuperZ If you are serious about new ones for 14k, I'd like to know where, I might buy another (although can't see it when I got 12k for a 4.5 year old one)
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”
