What's it like to live on the NE coast - Cullercoats, Whitley Bay etc?

Nice place but it sounds painful.I'm better than dirt. Well, most kinds of dirt, not that fancy store-bought dirt... I can't compete with that stuff. -
Whitley Bay, nothing special, no summer at all, always cold, full of tacky arcades. That people go on holiday there is beyond me, but I suppose if you live in Sunderland then it's "nice".I'm alright JackComment

Seahouses is nice, and not always cold (got sunburnt eating lovely fish and chips there last weekend)."I can put any old tat in my sig, put quotes around it and attribute to someone of whom I've heard, to make it sound true."

Fish and chips by the sea. Yum. Very hungry now.Originally posted by cojak View PostSeahouses is nice, and not always cold (got sunburnt eating lovely fish and chips there last weekend).I'm better than dirt. I wouldn't live in any of those places unless I was well out of the towns and suburbs. Rough, heroin soaked hell-holes IMO.Originally posted by DimPrawn View PostWhat is Blyth, Seaton, New-Biggin-By-the-Sea like?
Can't go much further up the coast than that.Comment

Tynemouth & Cullercoats, like others have said - very nice, very posh in places.
Avoid Whitley Bay for the reasons stated above!
Seaton Sluice, the beach has failed the blue flag test several times, but does have a few nice houses
Blyth, full of druggies apparently, but does have it's nicer side in places.
Seaton itself, don't know much about it apart from the big P&G plant there - enough alcohol stored on site to blow the whole town off the map should it go up....!
Newbiggin and Lynemouth, heard bad things, but never been. Also a massive Aluminium smelting plant and power station sits between the two...
I've heard Cresswell is nice, especially if you're a twitcher...!
Widdrington/Widdrington Station/Red Row - although not strictly on the coast, they are within walking distance of Druiridge Bay, one of the best beaches in the country!
All depends what you're looking for really... you could go further north and still be close to the A1/A1068 to get into Newcastle within 30 minutes?
Like others have said Alnmouth is fab, although house rarely come up for sale there. There's also Warkworth. Avoid Amble... apparently it's like Blyth but with less to do...In case of emergency, break dance.Comment

Tynemouth is very nice - hence why i live there - or just outside anyways. You should be able to get a nice 2/3 bedroomed place for between 600-1000 per month, but if buying expect to pay 200k minimum.Originally posted by DimPrawn View PostTynemouth looks the best bet so far from what I can find/heard. Looks nice.
I will be embarking on a non-contracting business venture, so work up there is not important.
Whitley Bay looks to be spoiled by stag/hen parties.

Monkseaton in Whitley bay is nice - no stag parties etc - is the suburban type area - all pre-war semi's, leafy avenues etc, very nice if a little bit quiet.
Blyth, Seaton, Biggin are ex mining tulip holes - avoid. Tynemouth, Cullercoats or North Shields close to Tynemouth is the way forward, although avoid the centre of North Shields or any further in - these are really nasty.Comment

I once saw a Victorian poster in a museum "Come to Healthful Hartlepool". With ICI etc. just down the road it didn't sound likely.Originally posted by cojak View PostI have a mate who lives near Hartlepool, not far from a beach. Yep, Northumberland has some very pretty spots.Originally posted by DimPrawn View PostYes, is there anywhere on that coast that is less awful than Swindon?Behold the warranty -- the bold print giveth and the fine print taketh away.Comment

Best beach in england is at bamburgh castle - you can see holy island, it's all golden sand for miles, great stuff, just freezing cold.Originally posted by Sysman View PostYep, Northumberland has some very pretty spots.Comment
