Half the price and one third of the aircraft.

And costing about 50% more to the UK taxpayer per plane than the Rafale to the French ones.Originally posted by bogeyman View PostYes. Probably.
Too many cooks spoil the cassoulet!
Note that the Swedes is one of the other european coutries to have kept a national fighter program. With great success since they even managed to export it!
Their gripen is a nice little figher.Comment

Yep. The Swedes (SAAB) have always turned out top notch fighters. The Rolls Royce of jet fighters.Originally posted by Le Rosbif View PostAnd costing about 50% more to the UK taxpayer per plane than the Rafale to the French ones.

After all the UK has such a good track record of high quality low cost military hardware projects:Originally posted by Le Rosbif View PostSo shouldn't the UK have designed and built their own plane?
It would have been cheaper!
- SA80: probably one of the worst designed modern rifles
- Nimrod Early warning - cancelled, bought AWACS instead
- Nimrod Maritime patrol scheduled 2003, still not in service
etc...Comment

The key point is that it was an evacuation and they weren't left in the merde on the shore.

You forgot the multi-million pound Bowman Tactical Radio fiasco.
Bowman was the tactical field communications system that was so effing brilliant that British troops preferred to use their personal mobile phones to call and SMS each other instead! And left the rest of the troop haggling as to who would get the old 1970s HF comms sets that actually worked.
Typical of British MOD contracts. It cost squillions of tax-payers pounds, was outdated before delivery, and didn't work when it was.
The contractors for these MOD projects are the usual suspects. RACAL et al.
It stinks. Heads should roll from bloody blocks, but it's all just business as usual, chaps.

If the French had been up to the job our boys would never have had to leave blighty in the first place. We could have let Adolf have the mainland had we not had any honour.Originally posted by Churchill View PostComing from a gobsh!te frog, that comment is as laughable as it is offensive.

It seems the rest of the world soon forgets how our tiny little nation stood alone against the greatest foe Europe has ever raised. We may not have been able to beat him on our own, but we made damn sure we slowed him down while the rest made up their minds or grew a pair.I am not qualified to give the above advice!
